The markets took a significant downturn on Monday, with the benchmark Nifty closing below the crucial 23,700 mark amid broad-based selling pressure. 

The BSE Sensex fell 450.94 points or 0.57 per cent to close at 78,248.13, while the Nifty 50 declined 168.50 points or 0.71 per cent to end at 23,644.90. 

The market’s decline was particularly pronounced in the latter half of the trading session, as weak Asian and European cues coupled with a falling rupee and renewed foreign fund outflows dampened investor sentiment.
